This is a site dedicated to Fred Smoot. I am just a fan that was sad to see the original SmootSmack.com go away from the Internet. This site is in no way affilliated or endorsed by Fred, MSU, the Washington Redskins, or anyone else. Message me on twitter @tlfillingim with comments or suggestions.

welcome

When Smoot was playing for Mississippi State, a fan dedicated a website to his trashtalk, Smootsmack.com. In those days, the internet was still pretty new and this was a great resource for all Smoot's quotes in the media. According to the Internet Wayback Machine, this site lasted from October 2000 until about March of 2005 when the original owner shut it down. Luckily, in 2008, someone (@pom5) thought to look for SmootSmack again and was able to find all the quotes and post them in a blogger post.

Since I agree with @pom5 that these things need to be preserved on the internet, I have created this page. I'm also going to copy his list of Smoot Smack and display them here.

    • "I know we did. He's gonna be very good, but he's very young and he ain't never played against Mississippi State. Until you play Mississippi State, you don't know what the blitz is." (On rattling Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen)
  • "That's the worst field I've ever played on. I don't know if they spray painted it or what but it was slippery. It was real thick, too. And I don't know much about cutting grass, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night." (On the Kentucky home field grass)
  • "We dominated them. We didn't slip up and just beat them, we dominated them. From the first quarter until the last quarter, we beat them. If a receiver caught a pass, they paid for it. That's why their fingers started getting shorter and shorter." (On the dominating win over Florida)
  • "I told him (Spurrier), 'It's too late. If we had another quarter, you might have had a chance,'" (To Spurrier after the game)
  • "At the end of the game, (Florida receiver Jabar) Gaffney didn't even want to look at me. There was a lot of talking about the beginning. They went out with the 'we're better than you' attitude. They said we didn't have the offense to beat them. Toward the end, their heads went down, and I really started yappin'." (On Florida's Jabar Gaffney)
  • "[The Florida receivers said] all kinds of things like I'm not as good as I think that I am. That they were going to burn me. I said, well come on and burn me." (And the Florida receivers tried to Smack back)
  • "They came out there with that aura. They said, y'all don't have an offense that can beat us. We just rolled up 500 and some yards on them. People talked all that stuff about us not playing the big boys, the Floridas and the Tennessees. Well, if they were #3 then I want to see who #1 and #2 are. It seems like we can't make people understand that we're a good football team and when you come to the Dog Pound, it's gonna be a long day. I don't care who you are." (On Florida's attitude before the Florida game)
  • "It's only 2:30, but it's going to be a long day. A long day." (To the Florida receivers)
  • "Yeah, I read in the paper earlier in the week (Rodney Daniels) said he couldn't wait. This was his 'breakout game'. He broke out, alright, what, with five catches for seven yards? It must have been a rash he broke out with." (On Rodney Daniel's pre-game talk before the Auburn game)
  • "Rudi got a lot of snot bubbles today. He's never been hit like that before. Now he knows." (On Rudi Johnson's performance in the Auburn game)
  • "CBS, you've been good luck to us. Keep coming back." (On CBS covering the Florida and Auburn games)
  • Heard outside the locker room after the BYU game: "They got one on you, Fred," said a fan. Smoot just smiled and said, "Yeah, I allow one a year." (On the BYU Touchdown on him)
  • "I've been working all week on what I'm going to say those men from BYU. These aren't young kids we're dealing with. These are men with families, mouths to feed. They'll want to hear something special since most of them are old enough to be my daddy." (On preparing for BYU)
  • "Hey, send me to the big leagues. Throw it again." (To BYU's coach LaVell Edwards on the sidelines)
  • "Where is that famous BYU offense we heard about? I haven't seen it, I haven't seen nothing." (On BYU's offence while State was up 24-7 in the 2nd quarter)
  • "Fans are my motivation. Everybody needs to jump on board. This ride is Atlanta and then Miami bound. The Dawg Pound will rock the house this year." (On fans and the year)
  • "I'm ready to mix it up baby. When you watch our defense this year the interlude should be welcome to Prime Time. We're loaded." (On this year's defense)
  • "I talk all day, all four quarters. One guy even tried to spit on me, but I'm not gonna stop. I'm not going anywhere so they might as well get used to it." (And then there are those that would spit on him)
  • Gene asked Fred Smoot at the Central Mississippi Extravaganza last night if he had a Smootism. Direct quote from Fred - "Antonio Hargro will be the next Randy Moss after I get through with him in practice this year." (On Antonio Hargro, MSU's Freshman WR)
  • Q: You are really vocal out on the field and even on the sidelines. Do you intentionally try to get the offensive players riled up with your talking? Fred Smoot: I intentionally try and bring that flavor to practice. Once you get that flavor in place you are going to take it to the game. Then the entire team has that emotion for the opposing team. Q: I noticed while you were vocalizing toward the offensive team, the defensive team was laughing then they were out there and hyped up as much as you were. Fred Smoot: That's what I'm saying. That's how a team gets better. You can compare these last two days to the last two weeks and you will see what I am talking about. They were having quiet practices where they were going through the motions. Now we are getting after each other. That's what makes a championship team. If you are ready to go after each other, then you are going to be ready to go after somebody you don't know even harder. (A Q&A on Why does Smoot smack?)
  • "It ain't easy being George, Weasey" (On his nickname for teammate George White)
  • "I guess we better pack heavy. Take a picture of your family and hide it in your helmet, because it's gonna be a while." (On the first three games on the road)
  • "I'm still the Undisputed Mouth of the South!" (On smacking with teammate Antonio Hargro)
  • "It's not over until the bell rings. Apparently, Auburn doesn't know that." (To Auburn after a comeback win)
  • "People think I just talk to talk, but I just get intense. I love the game, man. I like to deliver a little sermon while I'm dishing out punishment on my side of the field. And I don't like for anybody to run or throw my way. That's what you call shutting a whole side down." (More on his smack)
  • "Man, we went 9-2. Georgia went 7-4. They might as well have put us playing on BET on Christmas Eve in the We Got Screwed Bowl." (On getting snubbed by the Outback Bowl)
  • "It's like this. 64% of the earth is covered by water and the rest is covered by Smoot!" (On how to cover SEC receivers) "I told people back then (high school) I had a lot to prove," Smoot said. "And now there's really a lot to prove. but I don't just think we can win a national championship at Mississippi State. I know so." (On MSU winning a national championship)
  • "If you do my homework, I'll let you catch a pass" (To Vanderbilt's WR Todd Yoder, following an article in a Vandy student newspaper stating the intellectual superiority of Vandy and how MSU was a team made up of "less-intelligent" junior college players.)
  • "I love that car, I'll never get rid of it. I might be driving a Bentley, but I'll keep my old car. It was with me in the tough times." (On his candy-gold 1985 Chevy Impala)
  • "I also told Coach Tuberville he should have never left Mississippi. He turned his back on the whole state. A traitor is a traitor, and his team paid for it." (On Tubberville leaving Ole Miss)
  • "I'll be honest. Look at their faces as they walked off the field and that'll tell you. They might come in here with the big numbers. But we all know which team walked the walk."(On Oklahoma State)
  • "They've never seen anything like the Smoot dawg!" (On Clemson after the Peach Bowl)
  • "We're the team of the new millennium. Mississippi State is the school of the new millennium, so people better watch out for us." (On MSU in 2000)
  • "It's No. 1 against No. 1. It's a statement game for both teams. But as everybody knows, offense sells tickets and defense wins championships. What we have to do is go out there and make sure that statement rings true." (On MSU vs Kentucky)
  • "If a team wants to beat us, they'll have to beat us raw dog, talent on talent." (On how to beat MSU)
  • "No love. Our plan is not to let him touch the ball." (On Freddie Millons, who is from Starkville and left to go to Alabama)
  • "The defense has been doing this all year. We did it for 11 games, why not make it 12?" (On MSU defence after the Peach Bowl)

  • "Making fun of juco players is probably not the smartest thing to do since half our defense came from junior colleges." (To the Vandy Commodore Newspaper)

  • "My role is to take a receiver away or take a side of the field away. I like to go out and get it all done." (On his role)
  • "We watch receivers before the game. I noticed his shoes. I didn't like his shoes. I like to dress for a game. And this guy wasn't dressed for the game. It was like Corey Peterson's good and I was thinking he was going to come out all pretty and stuff. He came out there looking like a bum. And you know I had to say something about it." (On Ole Miss WR Corey Peterson's shoes)
  • "Beating Mississippi on Thanksgiving is better than turkey and gravy" (On beating Ole Miss)

  • "First, it was Mr. Deion Sanders; then Charles Woodson from Michigan won the Heisman wearing it," Smoot said. "Now I bring my own flavor and attitude to the number two." (On the #2 on his jersey)
  • "I've got a headline for you: 'It's gonna be SMOOTh sailing for the Bulldogs this season.' How's that?" (Suggested SEC Media Days headline)
